How to Receive Anointing of the Holy Spirit

There is a spiritual encounter after Salvation, it is called the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. This baptism of the Holy Spirit is an introduction to the glorious presence of the Holy Spirit. There is another spiritual encounter after the baptism of the Holy Spirit, it is called the anointing or enduement of power.

In Luke 3:22, we saw Jesus receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit as the Holy Ghost descended upon Him in a bodily shape like a dove. After that Spiritual encounter at the river Jordan, He went into the wilderness to pray and fast for forty days. There He had another Spiritual encounter which is the anointing or enduement of power. Luke 4:14 recorded that Jesus returned from the wilderness after His fasting and prayer with the power of the Holy Spirit and His fame went about all the region of Galilee.

It is not enough to be born again and filled with the Holy Spirit. It is not enough to speak in tongues and prophesy. There is more in God that you need to experience. It is the anointing of the Holy Spirit.  Many books, articles, and sermons have been taught about the Holy Spirit and His anointing. However, I am about to share with you fresh revelations, insight, and wisdom on how to receive anointing of the Holy Spirit in such a manner you have never heard it before.

What is the Anointing?

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Acts 10:38

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8

The anointing of the Holy Spirit is not the olive oil from Jerusalem. It is not the mustard seed from Isreal. It is not the holy water from the pool of Bethesda. Neither is it the black stone from Saudi Arabia. It is not the coat, shoe, hand, or picture of your pastor or prophet. It is not your church bangle or insignia. It is not crucifix or rosary beads.

What then is the anointing of the Holy Spirit?

The anointing of the Holy Spirit is the power of the Holy Spirit given to a believer to enable him to do the supernatural works of God. Another name for the anointing is unction. The bible says,

But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. 1 John 2:20

Two common Greek words that are translated power are, “exousia” and “dunamis”.
Exousia means control. But Dunamis means the dynamic ability to cause changes. So power is the divine ability, potency, force, capability, strength, and might of the Holy Spirit that can cause supernatural changes. The bible says,

And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Luke 24:49

The anointing of the Holy Spirit is the promise of God for every believer. It is not meant only for some selected Christians. Whether you are a pastor or just a new believer in Christ, the anointing is for all of us. So what does it mean to be anointed? To be anointed is not to have olive oil or groundnut oil poured on your head. To be anointed means to be endued with power from on high. When you are anointed, you are supernaturally empowered by the Holy Spirit for a special assignment for God on the earth. There are singers, but there are also anointed singers. You can always see the difference when both handle the microphone. There are preachers and there are anointed preachers. Their medical doctors and there are anointed, medical doctors. There are lawyers and there are anointed lawyers. There are businessmen and there are also anointed businessmen.
King Saul was a professional soldier and warrior of Israel but he was not an anointed warrior. Yet he couldn’t face Goliath the champion of Gath. But David was an anointed unprofessional warrior. He killed Goliath with the anointing, not with a Doctorate degree in military intelligence and martial arts. When you are anointed, you are supernaturally enabled and empowered by the Holy Spirit to accomplish a task which human strength and abilities cannot do.

What is the Source of the Anointing?

Dear preacher, Politician, Businessman, and every other lover of the anointing, the power you are looking for is not in the Atlantic Ocean. You don’t need to sleep with a marine spirit to get power from God. This anointing is not found in the shrine of native doctors. Voodoos or herbalists can’t give it to you. You can’t see it in the chambers of metaphysics, esoteric and occult grandmasters. Then who or what is the source of true power and anointing? The bible says,

God hath spoken once, twice have I heard this, that power belongeth unto God. Psalm 62:11

Power belongs to God.  He is the only source of true power. Every other source that promises to give you power is fake and useless.

Four Levels of the Anointing

The book of Ezekiel 47:1-5 shows a wonderful picture of the four levels of the anointing. The rivers of the spirit could be likened unto the anointing of the Holy Spirit. 

First, there is the ankle level anointing. Secondly the knee level anointing. Thirdly the level of the loin and the fourth is the Over-flowing level anointing.

The ankle level anointing is the lowest level of the anointing. It is the starting point of every believer. The ankle level anointing is received at salvation when a sinner gives his life to Christ. This ankle-level anointing plays a role in the repentance and conversion of a sinner.

The knee level anointing is received when a believer is baptized in the Holy Spirit. This knee-level anointing plays a role in the manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer.

The loins or waist level anointing is received when a believer is endued with power from on high. It enables the carrier to operate in unusual miracles, signs, and wonders. Most preachers who have healing and miracle powers operate in this level of the anointing.

The loins or waist level is not the end of the anointing. There is the higher level which is the over-flowing level.  This level comes from time to time as the carrier of the level of the loin grows and increases in the anointing. The growing and increase of the loins level anointing are what give birth to the over-flowing anointing. Jesus spoke about this overflowing anointing in John 7:38

He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Notice the plural in the scripture above, “rivers”. That’s over-flowing anointing. With the waist or loins level anointing, as a pastor before people will receive healing in your meetings, you will have to shout, lay hands on everybody, and sweat. But when the over-flowing anointing comes, miracles and healing happen everywhere you go without your prayer or laying of hands. It is so powerful; you don’t struggle or sweat to make miracles happen. The over-flowing anointing is God’s best for all His children. Don’t settle for average. Go for the over-flowing anointing.

Purpose of the Anointing

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jer 29:11

God doesn’t give you anything without a plan or purpose. He gave us eyes to see, ears to hear and mouth to speak. In the same way, lets’ find out the reasons or purpose for the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The Purpose of the anointing 

1. To make us effective Soul winners for Christ- Acts 1:8

2. To equip us to do good works for the kingdom of God and humanity- Acts 10:38

3. To equip us to confront and overcome all the powers of the devil- Luke 10:19

4. To equip us to humble our enemies to submission- Psalm 66:3

5. To enable us to get goodwill, loyalty, and favor of people- Psalm 110:2

6. To break every yoke and limitation of life- Isaiah 10:27

7. To protect and shield us from every harm and attack of the enemy- Psalm 105:15

8. To enable us to get rich- Deut 8:18

9. To enable us to live a life worthy of a child of God- John 1:12

How to Receive the Anointing 

How to Receiving anointing of the Holy Spirit is not a herculean task. Every secret in the kingdom of God is an open secret. The word of God is God’s answer to every question of man. Now I will show you from the scriptures three sure ways to receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit. They are:

1. Through prayer and fasting- Luke 4:1-14, Luke 24:49

There is no shortcut to the anointing; Jesus the Son of God didn’t get the anointing of the Holy Spirit on the premise that he is the son of God. He paid the price for the anointing which is prayer and fasting. If you want to receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit, prayer and fasting are how to get it.

2. You must Love righteousness and hate iniquity- Psalm 45:7

The price for the anointing is righteousness and holiness. If you are not ready to walk in purity as a lifestyle, forget about the anointing. The condition for receiving the anointing of the Holy Spirit is consecration. Jesus Christ the Son of God didn’t receive the anointing only because he is the son of God, He received the anointing because He loved righteousness and hated iniquity. The problem with some of us is not a lack of love for righteousness. Many Christians love God and everything about the kingdom of God. But the problem has always been the fact that some of us love righteousness and still love our secret pet sins. You can’t love God and still love Satan. It doesn’t work that way. The authentic proof that you love righteousness is your hatred for sin. Please if you desire to receive the anointing, hate sin without apology.

3. Be committed to kingdom service- Psalm 89:20

Another sure way to receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit is to be committed to kingdom service. God does not anoint supervisors and commentators. He only anoints servants. Even to this very moment, God is still searching for servants to anoint and use for His end-time agenda. Can God find you? Forget about your titles and money and serve God. When you are too big to serve God, you will be too small to be anointed by God.

Conclusion

Having considered how to receive anointing of the Holy Spirit, please understand that sometimes when you are angry or depressed the anointing can hibernate and you will need to activate it. The same principles that gave you the anointing can also activate and sustain it. Another kingdom key that activates the anointing is spiritual songs and worship. Remember that anointing is transferable and very contagious. You can impart the anointing to others through the spoken word or laying of hands. Now receive the anointing and be blessed forever.
