How to Receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Every believer needs the Gifts of the Holy Spirit to be able to serve God effectively and impact humanity positively. We also need these gifts of the Holy Spirit for our all-round good and profiting.

It’s not like many Christians don’t know the importance of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the challenge of most people has always been how to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit . If you have received Jesus Christ in your life and the baptism of the Holy Spirit, then receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit won’t be a rocket science.

In this post, I will show you how to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit without any stress, whether you are a new believer or already established Christian. Before I tell you how to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, I need you to understand the purpose of these gifts, so that when they start manifesting in your life you won’t abuse them.

The Purpose of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Every valuable product around us has a purpose. The microphone has a purpose. The pen is meant for writing, not writing and cooking. When you try to use the pen to cook as pot, you are going to spoil the product. In the same vein, if you are going to enjoy the top performance of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, you must use them for the very purpose for which they exist.
What is the purpose of the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

“He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself, but he that prophesieth edifieth the church” 1 Cor 14:4

• The Gifts of the Holy Spirit is given to the Believer for his own Spiritual empowerment and edification.

God does not want you to inspire, motivate and edify others and remain empty and spiritually weak. He gives you the gifts of the Holy Spirit so that you can charge up your spiritual life and build yourself up in the Spirit with power and glory. The gift is for your personal spiritual empowerment and energizer.

• The purpose of the gifts is to edify the church.

God does not give you the gifts of the Holy Spirit to entertain the world, the gifts are given to you to edify the church. The gifts are for the spiritual empowerment, growth and advancement of the body of Christ.

• The purpose of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit is for Soul-winning- Acts 1:8

One of the core reasons for the gifts of the Holy Spirit is for evangelism and soul winning. The gifts are given to demonstrate the reality that Jesus Christ is Lord. The purpose of the gifts is to bear witness and serve as a living proof that God is real. When the word doesn’t mean anything to the hard hearted sinner, the signs and wonders emanating from the gifts of the Holy Spirit will convince him.

• The purpose of the gifts is to bring glory to God- Acts 12:23, Malachi 2:1-2

Everything we have received from the Lord is not for our own glory and praise of men but for the glory of the one who lives forever and ever. The purpose of the gifts is to bring glory, thanks, praise and honour to the name of the Lord. Any time you take the glory for the gifts of the Holy Spirit, you have taken the place of God and the consequence is a curse from God.

How to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit

“ But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way” 1Cor 12: 31

• Earnestly Desire for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Your hunger and earnest desire for the gifts of the Holy Spirit is your first requirement towards receiving it. Anything you don’t desire will not desire you. It is through desire that men separate themselves to seek and encounter the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Without expectation there is no manifestation. You have to earnestly crave for these gifts with all your heart and soul. When the hunger for spiritual gifts comes upon you, it will naturally overrule your hunger for your favorite food. Until your hunger for the gifts of the Holy Spirit becomes greater than your hunger for your daily bread, you are not ready. One proof that you are hungry is that nothing else will matter to you except the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

• Fasting- Isaiah 58:6, Acts Acts 13:2

You cannot be in the flesh and expect to receive the things of the Spirit. If you want the gifts of the Spirit, you have to be in the Spirit. Fasting locks you down in the physical and opens you up in the Spirit to receive. When you fast, your spiritual antenna becomes sharp and sensitive to receive from God. It takes fasting to command the flow of the gifts of the Spirit.

• Fervent Habitual Prayer life- James 5:16

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteousness man makes tremendous power available. Prayer opens the portal of heaven and brings the divinity to mingle with humanity. In the place of prayer, mortals are forged into immortals. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are provoked on the altar of prayer. When you pray through, you will breakthrough into the avalanche of Spiritual gifts.

• Commitment to Kingdom Service- Matt 6:33, Psalm 89:20

 God does not anoint everybody. He only anoints His servants. As long as you remain a supervisor in the house of God, you don’t have any share in the gifts of the Spirit. God is constantly looking for men and women who are solely committed to kingdom service and when He finds them, He pours out the gifts of the Spirit upon them. Elisha served and served until his name changed to the man who poured water into the hands of Elijah. No wonder he carried a double portion of Elijah’s gifts and anointing. Don’t sit down in church as God’s senior brother. Look for where to serve. Join one service group in church and be committed doing it.  I can’t remember any time anybody laid hands on me to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I have been busy serving the Lord for the past two decades now. And the more I serve Him, the more the gifts keep increasing.

• Focus- 2 Kings 2:10-12

Another thing you need to receive the gifts of the Spirit is focus. Elijah said to Elisha, if you see me when I am being taken from you, that difficult thing you are asking will be yours, but if you don’t see me, it won’t be so for you. Focus! Distractions are enemies of spiritual empowerment. The manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit will require your 100% attention. Until your eye is single, your whole body won’t be full of light. You can’t be running here and there and expect to receive the gifts of the spirit. You need focus, yes absolute focus.

• You Need a New Heart of Righteousness- Ezekiel 36:26

It takes a new heart to attract a new Spirit. You need a heart of righteousness to attract the Spirit of God and His gifts. Remember, without holiness no one can see God. Sin is a turn off for the Holy Spirit. When sin comes, the gifts of the Holy Spirit will vanish away. But when purity comes, they will come to dwell in you. Make up your mind to live a holy and righteous life if you want to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It takes a consistent walk in righteousness and holiness as a lifestyle to command an unusual manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in your life.

Conclusion
The gifts of God are irrevocable. Once He gives you a gift, He doesn’t take it back from you. However, the gifts of God are customized to work and function at their best only under the control and leadership of the Holy Spirit. When you receive these gifts, do your best to sustain the presence of the Holy Spirit so that you will continue to enjoy the gifts at their best potentials. It is possible to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands and impartation of the anointed servants of God. Look out for Holy Ghost filled and anointed ministers of the Gospel and submit to their ministry. Every carrier of the gift can impart the gift to you by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
