The word wisdom is a subject of enigma among many people. The Oxford Learners dictionary defines wisdom as the ability to make sensible decisions and give good advice of the experience and knowledge that you have.
Aristotle the Greek Philosopher defined wisdom as the ability to deliberate well about which courses of action would be good, and expedient.
In this post, I will briefly share with you what wisdom is according to the Bible. You will understand the biblical meaning, definition and explanation of wisdom . Now let’s get started.
What is wisdom according to the bible?
And unto man he said, behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding. Job 28:28
According to the bible, wisdom is not common sense. It is neither tricks nor craftiness as some people think. Wisdom is defined in the Bible as the fear of the Lord. So wisdom is the ability to respect and reverence God in words, thoughts and action. A wise man considers God in everything he does. You are not wise if you don’t respect God. The bible based wisdom considers God’s feelings and opinions before making decisions or taking actions.
A man is not wise because he is tricky or cunning. A man is considered a wise man when he fears God and keeps His commandments.

The bible based wisdom is not a cheap talk. Wisdom according to the bible is mighty works. Wisdom is divine ability to proffer solutions to difficult problems of man. It is the divine ability to provide answers to dark questions of life that defy human reasoning and abilities. For instance, finding a permanent cure to HIV AIDS is a very difficult health question among the health sector, it takes wisdom from God to provide answer to that question. Many advancement in science and technology today is a display of God’s wisdom in reality. The aircraft, internet, automobiles, telecommunication etc are not demons. They are works of divine wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to produce solution to difficult problems of humanity and answers to the dark questions of life.
What is wisdom according to the bible?
Thus saith the Lord, stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, we will not walk therein. Jer 6:16
Wisdom is the ability to discover God’s ways and to follow them. God has ways and His ways are different from our ways. They are the old paths that lead to rest. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than ours. Wisdom is not cutting corners and following short cuts. Wisdom is finding the high ways of God and sticking with them forever. It is following the high ways of God that makes high flyers in life and destiny. Man’s methods and approach will always produce an ordinary result. But when you follow God’s ways of doing things, the result is always supernatural.

Therefore whoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell not; for it was founded upon a rock. Matt 7:24-25

Wisdom from the bible perspective is not just the acquisition of facts. The bible based wisdom is the application of godly and relevant knowledge. Knowledge is not power until it is rightly put into use. The good use of godly and relevant knowledge or information is called wisdom.
Therefore, I will like to define wisdom as the ability to know the scriptures and apply them. Wisdom is knowing the word of God and living by it. Quoting scriptures is not wisdom. But living the scriptures is Biblical wisdom. In the world today, people consider you as naïve when you try to obey and live by the word of God. What they don’t know is that you are operating the wisdom of God.
When revelation meets with application it becomes wisdom. Knowing the scripture and doing nothing about it is not wisdom. Until you become a doer of the word, you are yet to operate in the wisdom of God. It’s not enough to know what the bible says, you need to do what the bible says to become a wise person.
The bible is not just a religious book to be carried to church on Sundays. It is the creator’s wisdom for living. Living by the scripture is the wisdom to secure your future. You don’t have a future outside the scripture. The scripture is the wisdom of God. And it cannot be broken.
What is wisdom according to the bible?
But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power, and the wisdom of God. 1 Cor 1:24
Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God. When a man finds Christ, He finds wisdom. When you know Christ, He becomes your wisdom. Jesus Christ is the fullness of God’s wisdom. You can’t have Christ and be a dummy in Life. A little child who has Christ will be wiser than an old man who doesn’t have Christ. Knowing Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Savior is knowing wisdom. Receiving Him into your life is receiving wisdom. The new birth encounter is a matriculation into wisdom. Until one is saved, he is not wise. Salvation is the beginning of wisdom. Be born again.
The Source and Origin of Wisdom
Wisdom is not found within the four walls of the classroom. The source and origin of wisdom is not in the occult, metaphysics and esoteric chambers. It is not in the covens of witchcraft. The devil and all his agents are not the source and origin of wisdom. Wisdom is not found in the Bermuda triangle or Atlantic ocean. No mortal has the source and origin of true wisdom. God is the source and originator of divine wisdom and only Him can give it to you. If you need wisdom ask God for it, not men. The bible says,
But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Man knoweth not the price thereof, neither is it found in the land of the living. The depth said it is not in me, and the sea saith it is not with me. Whence then cometh wisdom? And where is the place of understanding? Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air. Destruction and death say, we have heard the fame thereof with our ears. God understandeth the way thereof, and He knoweth the place thereof. Job 28:12-14, 20-23
Conclusion
Since wisdom comes from God, the bible remains the final authority for finding meaning, explanation and source of wisdom. When it comes to the true definition of wisdom, everything rises and falls on the Bible.
