One personality that is usually misunderstood is the Holy Spirit. That’s because many people around the world don’t know Him or the wonderful works He does in the life of a believer. If you want to know who the Holy Spirit is and His works in the life of a Christian, this post is for you.
Whether you are a new believer or an established Christian, this post will open your eyes and give you more insight into the person and work of the Holy Spirit so you can deepen your relationship with Him and maximize all the wonderful blessings He brings.
It is impossible to live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit. If you take away the Holy Spirit from Christianity, what will be left is a dead and powerless religion.
What makes Christianity so powerful is the Holy Spirit. The moment you know the Holy Spirit, everything about your life will change.
I want to introduce to you the one who changed my life. I met Him when I was a no body and He made me somebody. I met Him when I was a dummy and didn't know anything and He made me a wise man. I met Him many years ago when I was a wheelbarrow pusher in the market and street hawker, and today He has given my life a meaning and made me a millionaire. The Holy Spirit changed me from a weak and fearful person. He made me a strong man and a champion that I am today in Christ.
I am about to introduce to you the most powerful person in the universe.
He is my closest friend and senior partner. I have known Him for the past two decades. So what I am about to tell you is not fables but truth and facts as an eyewitness.
A new dawn of glory is about to begin in your life as you read through the lines of this post. Now let’s get started.
What the Holy Spirit is Not
The Holy Spirit is not a wind. A wind is an inanimate object, the Holy Spirit is a person. The Holy Spirit is not fire. Fire is a non-living thing. The Holy Spirit is a living being. The Holy Spirit is not a dove. A dove is a bird which is an animal. The Holy Spirit is not an animal, He is a person. The Holy Spirit is not a force. A force is a push or a pull. The Holy Spirit is a Person.
On the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit manifested His presence in the form of wind and fire. That does not mean that He is a wind or fire. At the baptism of Jesus in river Jordan, the Holy Spirit manifested His presence in the form of a dove. That also does not mean that He is a bird. The Holy Spirit is Omni-Present, Omni-Potent and Omni-Science. He can manifest Himself in any form He chooses anytime, any day, anywhere.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the blessed Trinity-God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. He is equal with the Father and the Son. The Bible says,
“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one” 1 John 5:7
The Holy Spirit is one of the same kind with Jesus Christ. He looks like Christ, talks like Him and does the same works that Christ does. The Bible says,
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever” John 14:16
When Jesus was with His disciples, He was their Comforter. He provided everything they needed and made sure they were comfortable. Now as He was about to leave the earth, He promised His disciples that He was going to send them ANOTHER COMFORTER.-one of the same kind. So whatever Jesus was to His disciples is what the Holy Spirit is to us. He is our comforter.
I will explain what the comforter means later in this post.
The Holy Spirit is the biological father of Jesus Christ.
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: when his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost” Matt 1:18
Probably like many other people, before now, if they asked you, who is the father of Jesus Christ? you would have answered Joseph the husband of Mary. From now you should know that the Holy Spirit is the biological father of Jesus Christ. Joseph was his adopted father on the earth.
The Person of the Holy Spirit
Many people believe that the Holy Spirit is not a person. They argue that the Holy Spirit is an active force of God. I am going to prove them wrong in this post with infallible biblical proofs. |
Believe it or not, take it or leave it, all through the New Testament, the scriptures reveal the person of the Holy Spirit.
With every sense of humility, I want to tell you in this post that the Holy Spirit is a Person. He is not just an active force of God. He is a person more real than you are.
He has eyes and can see. The Holy Spirit has mouth and can talk. The Holy Spirit has feelings and can be annoyed or made happy. You agree with me that all these attributes I used in this post are real life characteristics of a person. A mere force doesn’t have mouth like a person and cannot talk. Hope you agree with that. An active force doesn’t have feelings or emotion and cannot get grieved or annoyed. Hope you agreed with that too.
Now let’s see from the Bible if what I said is true.
“As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, THE HOLY GHOST SAID, separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them” Acts 13:2
Can you see the person of the Holy Spirit in the above scripture? The Holy Spirit said, separate for me Barnabas and Saul. He spoke because He has a mouth as a person and can talk. He spoke in the language the people understood. A mere force can’t do that.
Now watch this,
“And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption” Ephesians 4:30
Only a person with feelings and emotions can be grieved or made sorrowful. If the Holy Spirit can be grieved, it means He is a person and not just an active force of God.
Now let me show you one more scripture to prove to you that the Holy Spirit is a person and not just a mere force. The Bible says,
“Howbeit when HE, the Spirit of truth, is come, HE will guide you into all truth: for HE shall not speak of HIMSELF; but whatsoever HE shall hear, that shall HE speak: and HE will shew you things to come” John 16:13
The English Personal Pronoun HE is used for a person while IT is used for a non-living thing. The deliberate repetition of the personal pronoun HE in the above scripture was just to unveil to us the unique person of the Holy Spirit. He and Himself refer to the person of the Holy Spirit.
I can say it a thousand times; the Holy Spirit is a person. He is more real than your nose. Though you can’t see Him with your optic eyes, but He is closer to you than oxygen in your nostrils. The day you get to know the Holy Spirit as a person who can talk to you, guide you and direct you, your life will never remain the same again.
I have personally had supernatural encounters and experiences with the person of the Holy Spirit. Many years ago when I was in Aba Nigeria, I needed to visit one of my kinsmen and give him an invitation card for my program but unfortunately, I didn’t know exactly where the man was living. All I knew was that the man has a house in one street in town. So I said, Holy Spirit if you are a person, you should know where this my kinsman is living, take me to his house now.
Immediately I heard the Holy Spirit said to me, enter taxi and move to that junction. When I obeyed Him, the Holy Spirit gave the next direction. He said, “Enter that road”, I did. Then something I will never forget happened. As I was going down the road, I saw one black gate and the Holy Spirit said to me, “that’s your brother’s house, enter there”. At this point, I couldn’t believe Him; I began to argue how can it be? It’s not possible! So He kept quiet and I kept going. But as I moved few steps further, I said to myself let me confirm this thing that the Holy Spirit told me, so I went back straight to that black gate and knocked on it.
Surprisingly, the younger brother of the man I wanted to see came out. The young man said to me, “Pastor how did you know our house?” I told him I didn’t know your house but the Holy Spirit showed me your house. That’s how I knew that the Holy Spirit is actually a real person who can guide and direct us in the time of trouble and confusion.
The Works of the Holy Spirit
There are millions and thousands of works the Holy Spirit can do for us and in us. Some of the wonderful works of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian are as follows:
1. The Holy Spirit as our Counselor gives use wise counsels and godly advice.
Sometimes, we are confused and don’t know what to do. The Holy Spirit gives us wise counsels and godly advice that helps us make wise decisions and take right steps in life. The Holy Spirit is our Special Adviser. Whenever you don’t know what to do, ask Him to advice you and you will be surprised what the Spirit of God will tell you. His counsels and advice are mind blowing. You can’t find it anywhere in the world. Any advice or counsel the Holy Spirit gives to you is accurate. Make Him your mentor and life coach. You don’t need to be like an orphan in the journey of life, let the Holy Spirit become your mentor and special adviser.
2. As our Helper, the Holy Spirit helps us to overcome limitations and hindrances in our path.
No matter how strong you are as a human being, if seven energetic and muscular men block your way, you are going nowhere. There is no way you are going to pass through those monster and fierce looking men. But with the Help of the Holy Spirit, you can just walk through those men who are standing as obstacle on your path effortlessly as if they did not exist. Zach 4:6-7 says,
“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. Who art thou, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it”
3. The Holy Spirit as our Intercessor helps us to pray effectively according to the will of God.

The truth is there are sometimes the last thing in your mind will be to pray, when you are weak in the flesh, the Holy Spirit helps you to pray. He also prays in us, through us and for us with groanings that words cannot utter. When you pray in other tongues, it is the Holy Spirit that is praying through your mouth.
“So too the Holy Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance” Rom 8:26 AMP
4. The Holy Spirit as our Advocate Solicits and Defends us before God and before our enemies and accusers.
The Holy Spirit is our lawyer. He is our last hope before our accusers and enemies. When the enemy tries to accuse us or condemn us, the Holy Spirit stands in our defense as our Advocate and Lawyer.
5. The Holy Spirit as our Strengthener gives us supernatural strength and power to serve God and to do hard things and succeed.

There is a limit to what we can do or achieve by our human strength and abilities. The Holy Spirit gives us supernatural strength to serve God and to do difficult things and achieve result. David killed Goliath not by his own strength but by the strength of the Holy Spirit. Sampson killed a lion with his bare hands, that was not just his own natural strength; it was the strength of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can give you the strength to do all things that you cannot do with your own natural strength.
6. The Holy Spirit as our Standby protects and delivers us in a time of emergency.
Sometimes the enemy attacks us when we lest expect it, at such a time of emergency, the Holy Spirit works for us and delivers us from destruction. Any time you escaped sudden death, danger, accident or unforeseen disaster, the Holy Spirit stood by your side and worked to deliver you from destruction. Without the Holy Spirit we could easily be swept off by sudden evils and disaster masterminded by the enemy. The Bible says,
“…When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him” Isaiah 59:19
7. The Holy Spirit Restores Life, Health and Vitality to our Body.
Another powerful work of the Holy Spirit is to restore life, good health and vitality to our mortal bodies. It doesn't matter what the Doctor's report is, the Holy Spirit can recreate and revitalize damaged cells, tissues and organs in our body. Just the way He brought Jesus back to life from the dead, He can do the same to any dead part of our body. Remember our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, therefore He ensures that His house is healthy and fit. The scripture says,
"And if the Spirit of Him Who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, [then] He Who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also restore to life your mortal (short-lived, perishable) bodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you." Rom 8:11AMP
8. The Holy Spirit Transforms Us and Moves Us from One Level of Glory to Another
It is the work of the Holy Spirit to change us. Our character and behavior is transformed to conform to the will and pattern of God through the work of the Holy Spirit. He changes us inside out. As the Holy Spirit works in us, we lose our carnal desires and become more hungry to know God better and to serve Him in righteousness and Holiness. The Bible says,
"And all of us, as with unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very own image in ever increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another; [for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit." 2 Cor 3:18AMP
9. The Holy Spirit is Our Teacher.

As humans our intelligence and mental capacity is limited. So there are many things we don't know or understand, the Holy Spirit teaches us all things. We can know things that are more than our age through the work of the Holy Spirit. We can understand things more than our peers by the work of the Holy Spirit. He is our Teacher and there is no end to His wisdom. The greatest University in the world is to learn at the feet of the Holy Spirit. He knows all things, you too can know all as you yield your life to the work of the Holy Spirit.
The Bible says,
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." John 14 :26
10. The Holy Spirit is our Reminder
He brings all things to our remembrance. When you forget anything, it is the work of the Holy Spirit to remind you that thing. With the Holy Spirit, the future is already secured. No forgetfulness and quick memory are the work of the Holy Spirit. Do you need electric brain and super quick memory? It is the job of the Holy Spirit. Get to know Him better.
11. It is the Work of the Holy Spirit to Judge and Execute the Wicked and Evil People
There are two sides in the work of the Holy Spirit. One side is to make alive, the other side is judgment and to kill. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Judgment and Vengeance. It was the Holy Spirit who killed Ananias and his wife Sapphira when they lied to Apostle Peter inside the house of God ( Acts 5:1-10). It was the Holy Spirit who killed Herod. The Spirit of God is not only a life giving Spirit, He is also a Killer Spirit. It is His work to convict, judge and execute the wicked. The Bible says,
"And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world and bring demonstration to it about sin and about righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God) and about judgment:" John 16:8AMP
Conclusion
The most powerful person in the universe is the Holy Spirit. He is a person more real than you. He can teach you, guide you, protect you, direct you, correct you, empower you and help you overcome your limitations and achieve great success and victory in life and destiny. Though you can’t see Him with your optic eyes, He is more closer to you than your own shadow. Reach out to Him today and get to meet Him. Learn to talk to Him and listen to His voice. There is no better friend to have than the Holy Spirit. My relationship and communion with the Holy Spirit changed my life. It will change your life too. Don't forget that another name for the Holy Spirit is the Holy Ghost, The Spirit of God or the Spirit of the Lord. God bless you.

Amen and amen. Thanks for the Feedback. Remain blessed.
DeleteIt's really a gracious thing for one to be spur by the Holy Spirit himself to announce himself (The Holy Spirit). The writer was graciously endowed with Devine illumination as he gave almost all there is to know about the personality called the Holy Spirit. As I read through his writings, I knew that it can only take the one which The Holy Spirit unveiled himself to, in order to be able to put down this great writing concerning him. I therefore recommend this write-up to everyone both the believers and unbelievers who wishes to grow richly both in their work and knowledge of the personality called the Holy Spirit. More grace to you sir, Rev. Damian Alamba. From Pst. Mike Ugochukwu Emeana
