The Purpose of Sonship

The devil is a slave master who delights to have his subjects bound hands and legs with chains and crawl on their stomach to beg for their needs. But our heavenly Father is not like that. God is not a slave master, He is a father. He is a gracious and loving father who desires for his subjects to be a part of His family and enjoy all the benefits that family brings, instead of being servants and strangers. In this post, we shall explore how we become sons into the family of God and the reasons why we exist here on earth as Sons of God.

WHO ARE THE SONS OF GOD?

Angels are not given the privilege to be the sons of God (Heb 1:5). That someone goes to church doesn’t make one a son of God. Sonship in Christ is not a function of belonging to any religious organization or attending Christian meetings. Someone can be in church for more than twenty years yet he is not a son of God. There are two kinds of people in the church. There are strangers and there are sons. Who are the sons of God? They are people who have received Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Saviour (John 1:12). The sons of God are men and women who are led by the Spirit of God (Rom 8:14). The sons of God are people who have yielded themselves to the Holy Spirit to a point where their will is subject to the will of the Holy Spirit. They are people who have surrendered themselves totally to the leading, biding, and desires of the Spirit of God. They are people whose thoughts, words, and actions are controlled by the Holy Spirit. The sons of God are the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of His person.

HOW WE BECOME SONS OF GOD

There are basically two ways to become a son in a physical family. One is that you have to be born into the family by birth. The other way is by adoption. In the same way, we become biological sons of God through the new birth or redemption (John 1:12) and by adoption. Adoption is a legal way of making someone who is not your child by birth become your bonafide child by fulfilling certain required obligations. According to Romans 9:4, the seed of Abraham is by default the adopted sons of God. And spiritually speaking, we are the seed of Abraham and the adopted sons of God in Christ. The bible says,

Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will. Ephesians 1:5

We are the adopted sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ. This didn’t happen by chance. It happened even before we were conceived and brought forth into this world. The bible says,

To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit of his son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. Gal 4:5-7

We are not just servants of God for a servant does not know what his master does. We are the biological sons of God. We are a part of God’s family. We are members of the God-head. We are not just in covenant with God. Our relationship with God is that of a father and son relationship. We are one with God and members of the God-class. You are not inferior or lesser than God. For as He is in heaven, so are you right here on the earth.

THE HERITAGE OF SONS OF GOD

Your sonship with God places upon your life some privileges and rights that are not open to servants or strangers. We have an inheritance as sons of God. The bible says,

The eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. Ephesians 1:18

As sons of God, we are not empty-handed. We have an inheritance in God. What are the contents of our inheritance in God? They are as follows:

1. As sons, God is our heritage- Genesis 15:1

There is no treasure on the earth greater than the treasure of having God as our heritage and exceeding great reward. Possessing God is the greatest of all assets. Having the almighty God as your heritage is the best thing that can happen to any mortal on the earth. When God is your portion in the land of the living, then you are settled forever.

2. The Earth is the Heritage of the sons of God- Psalm 115:16

The scriptures declare that God is the creator, founder, CEO, and owner of the earth. Then He willed it to His sons to manage it for Him. The earth does not belong to the devil. Demons don’t have any right to occupy any place on the earth. For the earth is given to the sons of God. Take your place Sons of God.

3. Forgiveness of sins- Acts 26:18

Forgiveness is the heritage of the sons of God. No matter the mistakes of your child, he is still your son. As a father, you can’t abandon your son because he peed on himself. You will clean him up and carry him home. That’s how it is with us and God. He is our father, any time we sin against Him, we can boldly come before the throne of grace and receive His forgiveness and mercy. Forgiveness is the heritage of the sons of God.

4. Deliverance from all evil- Obadiah 1:17

Deliverance is the heritage of sons. Whenever we are in trouble or confronted by any evil, we can beckon on the Armed Forces of Heaven for intervention and deliverance will follow.

5. Power with God- Gen 32:28

Power is the heritage of the sons of God. All power belongs to God and He shares it with His sons. Weakness and powerlessness are not the portions of sons of God.

6. Divine Health- Isaiah 33:24

Divine health is the heritage of the sons of God. There is no sickness or disease in God. Therefore, it is the right and privilege of sons of God to enjoy God’s divine health and vitality.

7. Success and Prosperity- Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1:5

Success and prosperity are the heritage of the sons of God. The success and prosperity of God belong to His sons. We are the heirs of God born to enjoy the riches and wealth of our heavenly father.

8. Divine Favour- Psalm 102:13

Divine favor is the heritage of the sons of God. God gave Daniel and his friends favor in Babylon. And Joseph found favor before the king. And God gave the people of Israel favor before the Egyptians and when they left, they didn’t go empty. We are not meant to go through life empty-handed. One day of favor from God is worth more than a lifetime of labor.

9. Divine Knowledge – Mark 4:11

Divine knowledge is the heritage of the sons of God. No child of God is supposed to be a dummy. Supernatural wisdom, knowledge, and understanding are the heritage of the sons of God. Forgetful memory is not in our DNA. By default, we have a quick understanding and electric brain, because knowledge is our heritage in Christ.

10. Long Life- Psalm 91:16

Long life is the heritage of the sons of God. No devil or man has any right to cut short your life. Your life is not a privilege, it is a commandment. You are under a commandment to fulfill your days.

11. Peace- John 14:27

Peace is the heritage of the sons of God. In a world that is full of trouble and raging storms, God’s peace is our portion to enjoy.

12. Good Sleep- Psalm 127:2

Sleep or good rest is the heritage of the sons of God. Insomnia is an attack from the pit of hell. When you can’t get sleep in the night after the day’s job, don’t take it as normal. Sleep is your heritage. Anything that disturbs your sleep is a spell from hell.

13. Heaven at last- Luke 12:32

Eternity in heaven is the heritage of the sons of God. Heaven is already prepared before the foundation of the world for the eternal abode of the sons of God. Heaven belongs to the sons of God.

THE PURPOSE OF SONSHIP

What are sons for? Why are we the sons of God? Why does God want sons? What are the responsibilities and obligations of the sons of God? We shall see it below.

1. The purpose of sons is to manifest the glory of God on the earth- Heb 2:10

No one has ever seen God before. The only way people can believe in the reality and existence of God is through the revelation and manifestation of the infallible proofs, glory, and evidence of God through His sons. The purpose of sons is to manifest the glory of the father.

2. The Purpose of sons is to honor the father- Malachi 1:6

Sons are given to bring honor to the father. A son that does not honor his father will die before his time. As sons of God, it is our duty to honor God with our life, character, body, and substance. We also need to do only business or things that bring honor to the name of God.

3. The purpose of sons is to destroy the works of Satan- 1 John 3:8

Every son carries the authority and power of his father. It is our duty as sons of God to destroy every work of the devil anywhere we see them.

4. It is the purpose of sons to carry the weight of the kingdom and pilot the affairs of its government on the earth- Isaiah 9:6

5. It is the purpose of sons to carry, reflect and reproduce the divine life of God on the earth- John 5:26

As sons of God, we are born to become life carriers and life-givers. We are gifts from God given to humanity to reflect and reproduce the divine life of God in other people. Nothing should die around you from now henceforth. You are a life-giving spirit.

6. It is the purpose of sons to continue and finish the work of the father-John 20:21

The sons are born to continue and finish the work of the father. It is our duty to continue and to finish the kingdom work and the great commission of preaching the gospel to all the nations of the world.

7. It is the purpose of the son to serve the father-Malachi 3:17-18

The duty of sons in the kingdom is to serve the father. Kingdom service is an authentic proof of sonship. Until service is in place your sonship is not approved.

8. It is the purpose of sons to fight for the father, defend and protect his interests- Psalm 127:4

Sons are to cover the nakedness of their father. They are born to fight for their father, defend and protect his interests. As sons of God, we must consistently contend for the faith that was once delivered to us. We must protect and defend the truth of the gospel.

9. It is the purpose of sons to inherit and preserve the legacies of the father- Luke 16:11

The true riches of God are committed to the sons of God on trust. It is our sacred duty to keep and preserve the legacies committed to our trust.
