Frankly speaking, many Christians around the world are struggling with one secret sin or the other, which they don’t want anyone to know about. Even some seemingly gifted and talented church workers and ministers of the gospel are still struggling under the weight of masturbation, fornication, pornography, alcoholism, lying, hot temper, or drug addiction. Only a few brave souls have come out openly to confess their secret sin and ask for help from those who are more spiritual than them.
The good news I have for you is that no matter how long you have been struggling with secret sin, you can overcome sin and iniquity. It’s possible to have total victory over sin and iniquity. Take this post very seriously and read it meditatively, before you are through with this article, the keys to come out of every secret sin and iniquity will be delivered into your hands. Now let’s get started.
What is Sin according to the Bible?
A lot of people have tried to define sin from a different panorama. But it doesn’t matter what any man has said about sin, what matters most is what the Holy Bible calls sin. So I am not going to tell you any scientific or cultural meaning of sin. What I will be sharing with you is the Scriptural meaning of sin. Now let’s find out what the Bible calls sin.
1. Sin is the transgression of the Law.
“Whosoever committed sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law” 1 John 3:4
Sin is lawlessness. It is breaking and violating God’s word. Sin is neglecting or disobeying the commandments and will of God as enshrined in the Holy Bible. The scriptures cannot be broken, any time you break the scripture you have committed sin. When you go contrary to the instructions, principles, and commandments of God as written in the Holy Bible, you have committed sin against God.
2. All unrighteousness is sin.
“All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death” 1 John 5:17
All wrongdoing is sin. Anything that is not right before God and man is a sin. Is it right to steal what does not belong to you? Is it right to commit adultery with another man’s wife or someone’s husband? Is it right to kill your fellow human being? Anything that is not right is wrong, and all wrongdoing is sin. That’s how the Bible defines sin.
3. Whatsoever is not of faith is sin
“And he that doubteth is damned if he eats, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin” Rom 14:23
Sin is anything done without a conviction of its approval by God. Anything that does not originate and proceed from faith is sin. Our actions are to be initiated and sponsored by the Spirit of God; anything which is not approved by God is a sin. It does not matter if everyone accepts and approves it, if God does not approve it, it is sin.
THE ORIGIN AND NATURE OF SIN
Sin originated from the devil. It is not just an act; it is the nature of the devil. Long before the creation of man, sin was first recorded in Lucifer when he rebelled against God in heaven. The first created being to sin was the devil.
Isaiah 14:12-15 and Rev 12:7-10 gave us an accurate record of how the devil was dethroned and cast out of heaven because of his pride and rebellion against God and His government. In Genesis 3:1-24, we saw the account of how sin originated in humanity. The first man Adam and his wife Eve were the first humans to sin. Because sin is not just an act but nature, through the sin of Adam, every human being is born into this world as a sinner.
Human nature was stained, defied, and contaminated by sin through the sin of Adam. By the law of reproduction, everything reproduces according to their kind. A bird gives birth to a bird, a lion gives birth to a lion and a goat gives birth to a goat. In the same way, when the first man Adam and Eve fell from the grace of God and became sinners by their disobedience to the instruction and commandment of God, all the children that Adam gave birth to became sinners according to the order of their parents. And the pattern continues to every generation of man. The bible says,
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Rom 5:12
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” Rom 3:23
The first man Adam was the gateway through which sin entered into the world and passed unto the human race.
WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

Sin has damming consequences. Sin is serious. Only a fool plays toy with sin. The bible unveils several consequences of sin. Let’s look at some of them very briefly.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” Rom 6:23
Some of the Consequences of Sin are:
1. Guilt or condemnation- (1 John 3:20-21).
Sin makes you have a guilty conscience. It makes your heart and devil condemn you.
2 Sin makes you a slave of the devil- (1 John 3:8).
Any time a man commits sin, the devil takes him captive. Sin makes one a captive and slave of the devil. Sin makes the devil become your master.3. Sin makes you a child of the devil-(John 8:44).
Sin is very dangerous. It makes one become a biological child of the devil. So if you are a sinner, God is not your father.
4. Sin Separates a man from God-( Isaiah 59:1-2).
Sin cuts off the intimate relationship man has with God. Sin disconnects a man from fellowship with God.
5. Sin makes a man an enemy of God (James 4:4).
God hates sin, therefore living in sin makes you an enemy of God. And if God is your enemy, no one can bail you out except you reconcile with God.
6. Sin makes the mind stupid and reprobate-(Rom 1:28).
Sin corrupts the mind. Sin can make you lose your mental dignity.
7. Sin can make you Sick-(John 5:14).
Sin can give access to sickness and diseases to enter someone's body. Though not every sickness or disease is a result of sin, a good number of people today who are suffering from one sickness or the other can trace the cause of their sickness to sin.
8. Suffering and hardship-(Isaiah 3:11).
God has vowed that it shall not be well for the wicked.
9. Sin can cause physical death (1 Sam 2:6).
Sin kills. I am not joking. It can lead someone to premature death. God killed Pharaoh, Herod, Ananias, and his wife Sapphira for their wickedness. The wages of sin is death, which includes physical death.
10. Sin leads to everlasting death in Hellfire-(Rev 20:11-15).
The way of sin is the way to hellfire. The end of sin is eternal judgment and destruction in hellfire.
Ways to Overcome Sin
Here are the 12 most effective ways to overcome sin:
You can’t overcome sin until you hate it. Your victory over sin and iniquity begins when you genuinely hate what God hates and love what God loves.
No one is a superman when it comes to sin. As long as you are human, wearing flesh and blood, your best option when you are tempted to commit sin is to flee. Don’t stay there to bind and cast, run as fast your legs can carry you.
One of the ways to overcome sin is to declare yourself a lifetime enemy of sin. Be intentional about your stand against sin and iniquity. Use every means available to you to rebel, strive and fight against sin in your own life, family, and the society at large.
The word of God in our hearts is a spiritual defense against sin. If you don’t want to sin against God, read, study, meditate and live according to the word of God.
If you want to overcome sin and iniquity, the scripture recommends that you walk and live habitually in the Holy Spirit, being responsive, controlled, and guided by the Spirit of God. When you walk in the Spirit, you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh.
Friendship is not by force, it’s by choice. Who you follow determines what follows you. If you want to overcome sin, don’t make people who have a track record of sinful habits your close friends. Let your friends be God-fearing people. No one meets you and leaves you neutral. Some friends are minus while others are plus. Separate yourself from friends who break you, reduce you spiritually, minus you emotionally, and influence you negatively. Time and Time again, it has been proven that one of the Ways to Overcome Sin is to make friends with Mature Christians who are spiritually minded, well behaved, and have the fear of God. Surround yourself with Spirit-filled Believers who have a track record of Integrity and Character.
The Holy is our Helper. We are completely helpless without Him. Acknowledge Him in your life and ask Him to help you live above sin and iniquity, and He will help you.
Prayer is the master key to supernatural transformation. One mystery of effective fervent prayer is that it will transform and change your life from the inside out. Live a life of prayer if you want to overcome sin and iniquity.
There is a way you will be too busy and committed to the house of God and the work of the kingdom that you will naturally become unavailable to sin and iniquity. When you are always busy in the church, which time will you have for the night party? Get busy with God’s work and certain sinful habits won’t find any occasion to creep into your life.
There is grace for consecration and holy living. It is not by might nor by strength but by the grace of God. Cry for grace every day to live a holy life. It is the grace of God that empowers a man to live a consecrated and holy life unto God. Receive that grace now in the name of Jesus Christ.
1. Be born again- (1 John 3:9).
Until you are born again, you don’t have any power to overcome sin. Sin is the natural lifestyle of the unregenerate man. Redemption is the way out of sin and iniquity. Repent and give your life to Christ, if you have not done so.
2. Hate sin- (Psalm 45:7)
You can’t overcome sin until you hate it. Your victory over sin and iniquity begins when you genuinely hate what God hates and love what God loves.
3. Flee from sin- (1 Cor 6:18).
No one is a superman when it comes to sin. As long as you are human, wearing flesh and blood, your best option when you are tempted to commit sin is to flee. Don’t stay there to bind and cast, run as fast your legs can carry you.4. Resist sin-( Heb 12:4)

One of the ways to overcome sin is to declare yourself a lifetime enemy of sin. Be intentional about your stand against sin and iniquity. Use every means available to you to rebel, strive and fight against sin in your own life, family, and the society at large.
5. Live according to the Word of God-(Psalm 119:9, 11).

10. Keep yourself busy with Kingdom service- (Matt 6:33)

Renew your mind daily with God’s word-(Rom 12:1-2)
A renewed mind makes a new man. Every change begins from the mind. So make it your duty to always renew your mind through the word of God. Listen to sermons, read Christian books and articles, attend Christian meetings, listen to gospel songs. Let your mind be busy with the things of God. It works.
12. Cry for grace for consecration and Holiness-(1 Cor 15:10)
There is grace for consecration and holy living. It is not by might nor by strength but by the grace of God. Cry for grace every day to live a holy life. It is the grace of God that empowers a man to live a consecrated and holy life unto God. Receive that grace now in the name of Jesus Christ.Conclusion:
Grace is not an occasion for deception and rebellion. We are not under grace to have the freedom to commit Sin. We are under Grace to have the liberty to serve God in true holiness and righteousness. Never claim to be under grace while living in sin. Grace without responsibility will make one a casualty of iniquity. Take responsibility to walk in total victory over Sin, Self, and Satan.
