Anchor Scripture: 2 Peter 1:4-7

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Introduction

In my previous article, I wrote intensively about Self-Control and we learned that Self-Control is the power to discipline oneself and walk in righteousness and holiness.

Today in this article, I shall be talking about the Benefits of Patience in regards to your Personal Development. It will be good if we start by defining what Patience is.

What is Patience?

Patience can best be defined as the ability to endure difficult people. It is a virtue or capacity that enables one to remain focused, unbiased, and unbothered in the face of difficult situations. Patience is the ability to stay put for a very long time in a difficult place without packing your bags. Patience is the ability to continue doing good in difficult times. It is the disposition ability to persevere in the time of trouble without giving up. Patience is the ability to remain calm without retaliating in the face of provocation. Another name for Patience is Perseverance or endurance. But I like to call it Stickability or Inner-Stamina.

Having defined what Patience is, We shall now look at the benefits it brings to your physical, mental, marital, financial, and spiritual development.

1. Patience helps you to avoid road accidents.

Most accidents that occur on our roads from day to day are caused by the impatience of some drivers. As a driver, Patience will help you to slow down when another vehicle is coming in front of you with speed when both of you are to share a little road. Instead of rushing forward in haste and colliding head to head with the on-coming vehicle, Patience will save you from road accidents that may damage your car or claim your life.

2. Patience helps you to obey Road Traffic Lights.

Many drivers who usually get nabbed and punished by the Road Safety Officials for disobeying the traffic lights are mostly impatient people. Patience helps you to obey traffic lights and other important road signs as a driver. How do you know patient people? When they are on the steering and come closer to the traffic light, they wait until they see the green light.

3. Patience enables you to get a job appointment or pass an Interview

When you are looking for a job and asked to come for an interview, Patience can help you pass the interview and secure the job. This is because sometimes your prospective Employer or Interviewer can deliberately decide to test your patience by asking you to come by 6 AM for an interview that will take place at 4 PM. You will have to wait for a very long time, sometimes without an air- conditioner in the Admin section. This invariably will test your patience. Impatient people will give up along the way and leave the premises. Only the Patient people will wait till the end.

4. Patience will help you to get promotion in your Work Place

Many great Businesses, Organizations, or Companies you see today started very small. Some people left their jobs and resigned from Amazon, Google, Walmart, Facebook, Living Faith Church, or Salvation Ministries during the days of little beginning of those companies and Organizations I mentioned here that are now regretting their impatience. Patience will help you to stick to your job and your job place no matter the challenges till the time it will yield fruits and increase.

5. Patience will help you not to buy a useless product or Service. It will also save you from investing in the wrong business.

Impatient people always fall victim to buying or paying for a useless product or service. When a marketer presents a product or service to you, don't be in a hurry to part ways with your hard-earned money. Take time to review the product or service to check if it is something worth paying for. It takes patience to do this. Give it some days before you buy. The same goes with any investment opportunity that presents itself to you. Don't be in a hurry to make any investment. One of the Benefits of Patience is that it will save you from wasting your money in an unprofitable venture.

6. Patience will help you to Marry the Right Partner as a Single

Many people have rushed in to marry a total stranger only to bite their finger at the end of the day. Patience will help you never to rush into marriage with anyone without first getting to know their character very well. You need the patience to study your boyfriend or girlfriend very well before saying " I do".

7. Patience will help you to last long in Marriage

Marriage is not a bed of roses. Every marriage comes with its peculiar challenges. It takes patience to stay in the marriage especially during times of little or no material wealth in the marriage. Many people who usually abandon their spouse and run away at the slightest sign of hardship usually regret it at last when God finally makes their spouse rich. The truth we must all know is that everyone has his own time and season. Patience will help you to wait until your own time to get wealth comes.

8. Patience will save you from being a Polygamist

Many men have become a husband of two or more wives because of Impatience. Some men fell into the trap of marrying a second wife even when the first wife is still living together with them peacefully just because the first wife is unable to get pregnant and bear them a child in the meantime. It is not a woman that gives children. It God who gives. Patience has proven many men and doctors wrong as I have seen couples who were unable to bear a child for 18 years eventually become a father and mother of great children. Patience is everything!

9. Patience will save you from committing Murder

Many people who are locked up in the prison today for committing murder are virtually victims of impatience. It takes patience to overlook the ill manner of your friends, neighbors, or relatives. One of the Benefits of Patience is that it helps you to tolerate the offense of other people and walk away without retaliating. Patience is better than strength. If you are not patient with people, you may do something crazy when you are annoyed or provoked.

10. Patience helps you to keep loving God while expecting answers from Him.

Sometimes God can delay your breakthrough to test your heart. Impatient people will stop loving God and eventually withdraw themselves from church activities when their expectations are not coming forth at the time they want it. But patient people will stick to God and His word until their blessings come. Until your Patience in God is tested, your love and faith in God are not yet genuine. Time will test your patience. Prosperity will test your patience. Poverty and financial hardship will also test your patience in God. Whether you will backslide or keep loving God in time of wealth or lack is a function of your patience.

11. Patience helps you to persevere and pursue your objective to its successful conclusion.

Many failures today are impatient people who never knew how close they were to success before they gave up. One of the Benefits of Patience is that it helps you to pursue your goals and dreams to satisfactory success. The minds that dream are many but those who have the patience to pursue and wait for their dream to be accomplished are few. Many people have started companies and businesses in good faith only to quit and run away at the sight of the smallest challenge. I don't know any successful man or woman in the world today who didn't face challenges and conquer them.

12. Patience will help you to develop a godly character.

Looking into the scripture, we know that affliction produces patience and develops in a believer a tried and proven character (Rom 5:3-4). Two important facts stand out to reason about. Firstly, that afflictions, trials, and troubles are not meant to kill or destroy the believer but to produce patience in him. Secondly, that there is no other way that we can have or obtain patience except through trials and tribulations. That is why we say that patience develops in a tried character. If you have not been tried, your character is still open to questions, for no one knows what you can do in such situations. However, it is unfortunate that the lives of many Christians would read, “Afflictions produce complaints, worries, grumbling, depression, defeat, hypocrisy and backsliding. Hence, we have many carnal believers and aged babes in the church today. This frustrates the plans of God. Apostle James admonishes the Christian to consider it a complete joy when faced with trials. He said that the result is to make the Christian complete and perfect, lacking nothing (James 1:2-4). Peter says that the purpose is to prove that your faith is genuine (1 Peter 1:7). Since Patience develops in tribulations, we must learn to be patient in times of trouble. See Hebrews 6:15

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. James 1:2-4

13. It helps you Secure God’s Promises

Can we obtain the promises of God without being patient? Throughout the scriptures, the Holy Spirit shows us how important patience is in others to win God’s approval and receive His promises. You need to be patient in other to please God. We must be like those who believe ( Heb 10:36) and have patience so that we can receive what God promised. Abraham was patient, and so he received what God promised him (Heb 6:12, Heb 6:15).

14: It helps you to Possess God's Kingdom

It is indisputable that we can only enter the kingdom of God through patience. The bible says, “He that shall endure to the end, the same shall be saved” Matt 23:13. One cannot live righteously occasionally and expect to be raptured when the trumpet sounds, seeing he might be taken unawares by his iniquity (Ezekiel 18:24). It is only through constant patience and well-doing that the Christian qualifies for eternal life ( Rom 2:7). Moreover, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but to those who lay aside every weight and the besetting sins and run the race with patience ( Heb 12:1).

Conclusion

Job in the Bible is an example of patience that Christians should emulate. We know also that his end was more prosperous than his beginning. Let us then allow patience to have her perfect work in us. But we must add godliness to patience. We must learn how to wait on God till our change comes. We also need to be Patient with people especially when their character and behaviour do not meet our standard. The truth is, people can change but they don't change overnight. Sometimes, it may take decades for any positive change to take place in an individual. And that is primarily the work of the Holy Spirit. So don't write off anyone in a haste. A bad guy today can become a good guy tomorrow. That your delinquent son or daughter today can become your best-behaved child shortly. Just be patient with people and give them room to change.
