Knowing the Purpose of Evangelism is as important as having zeal for Evangelism. There are many people who have zeal for Evangelism but they don't know the biblical purpose of Evangelism. Many Preachers today do all manner of things in the name of Evangelism. A wise man said, " When the Purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable". Evangelism has been used to deceive and defraud many gullible people. It is therefore imperative for us to ask ourselves this question, "What's the Purpose of Evangelism?"

If you are looking for an honest answer for this question in consonance with the scriptures this post is written for you.

The Purpose of Evangelism is not deceive people. Some single brothers and sisters and even some Married couples these days tell their parents or spouse that they are going to Evangelism and they use that as a trick to go and see their boyfriend or girlfriend. That's not the purpose of Evangelism.

The Purpose of Evangelism is not to solicit funds or beg money from people. Many Preachers now see Evangelism as a means to solicit for funds or beg people for money. That's not the Purpose of Evangelism.

The Purpose of Evangelism is not to condemn sinners. Alot of Evangelists go to market places and business places with megaphones condemning and embarrassing people because of the way they dress, walk or talk. That's not the purpose of Evangelism.

The Purpose of Evangelism is to preach the good news about the Kingdom of God-(Matthew 24:14). Jesus didn't send us to preach science, politics, religion, philosophy or tradition to people. He sent us to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God. The purpose of Evangelism is to help all men to know and understand what the kingdom of God is, where it is, how to enter it, how to live and walk in the kingdom and what benefits and privileges the kingdom has brought to mankind. Jesus didn't send us to talk about Politics or medical science. We are sent to evangelize the world with the gospel of the kingdom of God.

What's the Purpose of Evangelism? Another Purpose of Evangelism as revealed in the scriptures is to heal the sick, cast out devil's, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and do the miraculous works of Jesus in a hurting and dying world.

"Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers,  raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received,  freely give." Matt 10:8

The Purpose of Evangelism is to profer solution to difficult problems of people which are beyond their human reasoning and ability. So Evangelism is supposed to be a rescue mission, not an opportunity to take advantage of people's ignorance. The purpose of Evangelism is to heal the sick, not referring them to the hospital. When a preacher can't heal the sick or cast out devils or raise the dead, then he has missed the purpose of real Evangelism.

Evangelism is not this jamboree we see some people do in our streets and marketplaces. The purpose of Evangelism is to destroy the works of Satan.

"For this purpose  the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy  the works of the devil." 1 John 3:8

The purpose of Evangelism is not to impress people. The purpose of Evangelism is to destroy the works of the devil. Real Evangelism is meant to close down the devil's business located anywhere that Evangelism is taking place. When true Evangelism takes place in a particular location, armed robbers and kidnappers hideout in such place will be decimated, charms and witchcraft covens around that environment will be destroyed, men and women taken captive by the demonic spirits are set free. That's the purpose of Evangelism. When you finish your crusade or outreach in a place and evil people still find it very easy to operate there, then the purpose of your Evangelism is not fulfilled.

The Purpose of Evangelism is to save Souls.

" For I am not ashamed of  the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto  salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first,  and also to the Greek." Rom 1:16

An evangelist who goes out for Evangelism but doesn't give sinners an opportunity to answer an altar call is not different from a motivational speaker. The major purpose for Evangelism is to get souls saved. It doesn't matter how many hours we spend in Evangelism, if it doesn't translate to leading souls to accept Christ as Lord and Savior, then the purpose is defeated. Inspiring and persuading sinners to repent from sin and accept Christ is the central purpose of Evangelism. Even if it is only one soul that gives his or her heart to Christ at the end of a very big crusade or Evangelism Outreach, as long as God is concerned, that crusade or Evangelism Outreach is successful. To some Pastors today, the success of a crusade is determined by the number of people who attended the service or the amount of tithes and offering they gave. That's very pathetic. That's not the purpose of Evangelism. In God's panorama, the success of a crusade or Evangelism Outreach is not determined by the crowd who attended the meeting or the amount of tithes and offerings they gave but the number of souls who gave their hearts to Jesus Christ.

When a Preacher has missed his purpose, he will start chasing after the crowd, money and fame without any thought for the lost souls of men. When counting attendance and collecting tithes and offerings come before preaching the word and leading souls to Christ, then know you have come to the headquarters of Mammon and not the church of Jesus Christ. The purpose of Evangelism is to win souls for Jesus Christ. Souls first before every other thing.

The Purpose of Evangelism is to nurture new believers in the faith to enable them grow into effective Disciples of Christ.

" Go ye therefore, and  teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the  Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have  commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even  unto the end of the world. Amen." Matt 28:19-20

The purpose of Evangelism is not to witness to sinners only. We are to witness to new believers and older believers as well. Through Evangelism, new believers can be taught, mentored and nurtured to grow in the faith and to become effective Disciples of Jesus Christ. Through Evangelism we can encourage and strengthen other believers in the faith. In today's world where afflictions, troubles and temptations come to the people of God without time-table, we need to encourage one another through the sharing of the word, our testimonies of victories and financial support. We are to strengthen those who are weak and encourage those going through difficult situations in their lives right now.

What's the purpose of Evangelism?

The Purpose of Evangelism is to sound a warning of God's coming judgment. God is a fair and just Judge. He wants all souls saved. So the purpose of Evangelism is to sound an alarm to warn the wicked of God's coming judgment. If the wicked hears the warning of the gospel and repent, God will forgive them but if they refuse to heed the warning and continue in sin and die in sin, they will face God's judgement and wrath.

I don't want this post to be too lengthy. There are many other purposes when Jesus sent us to evangelize. Therefore this post is open for discussion. Use or sentence or more to tell us the purpose of Evangelism as revealed in the scriptures you know.

God bless you.
